Mini Bulk seed saves time

Developing Efficiency, Ease of Use

Many dealers move to bulk handling of their seed to satisfy customer demand. But according to Allen Anderson of Seed Ease, Inc. bulk handling can increase efficiency for both the dealer and the grower.

Anderson's systems range from bulk tanks to a simple frame that allows dealers to handle mini-bulk bags with a forklift. "The frame helps the mini-bulk bag keep its shape, rather than stretching out as you lift it," he explains. "It reduces lift height by about five feet." A conveyor and seed tender deliver the seed to the planter.

Time savings is the biggest benefit to a bulk system, explains Anderson. It might take 45 minutes to load a planter by hand using small soybean bags versus 15 minutes with a seed tender. "And using mini-bulk bags and a forklift, you're not worn out at the end," adds Anderson.

Anderson has helped design bulk systems for more than a decade. A typical system consists of a conveyor, forklift and Friesen bulk seed tender. Larger systems can include bins, seed treaters, and other components. "At first we couldn't sell the idea to anyone, but a lot of dealer's customers wanted them. When you have a windy day dumping small bags into a planter is tough."

Conserving Capital

Mini-bulk handling offers efficiency and flexibility to dealers who may not have high enough seed volumes to justify the capital investment in a bulk delivery system. Anderson notes that a bulk system with four tanks can cost $50,000-$60,000 plus pouring a concrete pad and any necessary grading. Its also mot efficient for dealers with sales of large amounts of a single variety. Mini-bulk systems are ideal for dealers who handle many different varieties or somewhat lower volumes, and can require an investment as low as $5,000 or up to $15,000 including a frame, hopper and delivery tender.
